I don't really like most stock grips (too small, too hard).
I have usually replaced the stock grips on any of my bikes with some sort of foam based ones. The ones I liked the best, I bought in the late 80's for my Honda Nighthawk 650. Big chunky firm closed cell foam. I looked for those for my BMW, couldn't find them, and haven't found anything else I really liked.
I tried 'Grip Wraps', and they were just what I wanted, except that wherever I put the Velcro joint, it annoyed me. I took them off.
Recently on another forum, someone recommended 3M Vetrap tape.
It's actually designed for wound wraps on horses legs, and comes in a variety of colors and widths. I picked 4" x 5 yds in black, which costs around $2! It's easily enough to do both grips.
You can vary the firmness of the grip to suit your own taste by how much you stretch it as you wrap, the more stretched, the firmer the result.
The stuff sticks very strongly to itself, but not to anything else. I don't know how long it lasts in use on grips, but I'm told 'a long time', and at that price, it wouldn't matter if it only lasted a year... It's virtually unaffected by water, and doesn't absorb it.
You can get it at Wal-Mart (limited selection), or any big box pet store (under Equine) or at Tractor Supply, or any Tack shop, or at Amazon.com...

I really like my grips now!

I've used some foam grips before, and liked them. I found these at cyclegear, and I think JC Whitney has some too.

I've tried both of those on my bike. I found both too small and a little too squishy. I stll have the JC WHitney ones, if anyone wants them...

I have used these for years on my previous 2 bikes and was very happy with them. I still have the stock grips on the FJR

I have used "grip puppies" very successfully in the past. I purchased mine from California Sport Touring. They stretch over existing grips. I find them useful in damping vibration on bikes with excessive buzz in the bars. Here is their website: http://casporttouring.com/

I use something which looks exactly the same as that vetrap tape on my grips. It's sold for the purpose of supporting sprained ankles and the like :)

When I first got my new ST1300 everything was perfect except the grips which were too narrow for my hands. After looking for new grips and other solutions I purchased some grip puppies and have been very pleased with them ever since. My only advice is to get them long enough to cover the whole grip. Err on the too long side as they can be trimmed shorter if necessary.
